After researching different transport and accommodation options, we opted to travel New Zealand by camper van, giving us the freedom to take things at our own pace. After a month of driving from Auckland and ending in Christchurch, I can wholeheartedly say that New Zealand offers some of the most stunning scenery I have ever seen in my life. We only had a week to cram in everything that we wanted to do on the North Island, so needless to say there was plenty more to do that we couldn’t fit into this time. Below is my 1 week itinerary of stops that you absolutely can’t miss on the North Island.
Day 1 – Arrive in Auckland
We arrived at Auckland airport early in the morning after two flights including a long stopover in Melbourne. Unfortunately, due to a cancelled flight, it meant that we had lost a day in New Zealand, so we didn’t get to explore the city of Auckland as planned. Instead we spent the day stocking up on food for our camper and catching up on sleep, ready to start our adventure the following day.
Day 2 – Hobbiton and Waitomo Glow Worm Caves
If you are a Lord of the Rings fan then you will have most certainly heard about Hobbiton. The set itself is a real farm based just outside of Matamata, and is home to the Alexander family, as well as The Shire, where the set now remains as part of the farm after the making of The Hobbit films. Tickets often sell out, so we made sure to get ours online well in advance. We had booked on for the first tour of the day, which meant that it was fairly quiet on our way round, and we could get some good photos without hundreds of people in the background. Read More
